Set up in ChatGPT

  • ChatGPT on the web (chatgpt.com) — do the first setup on the web.
  • A plan that lets you add your own connections — per OpenAI: Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu (the free plan cannot add custom connections).
  • Organization accounts (Business / Enterprise / Edu) may need a ChatGPT admin to allow it first.
  • A ScanFood account that is the shop owner, or staff with the “View reports” right (see the rules).
  1. Open chatgpt.com/plugins and press Add in the top-right corner.

  2. Choose Create MCP App.

  3. Fill in:

    • Name — ScanFood
    • Server URL — https://api.scanfood.co/mcp
    • Authentication — choose OAuth. Leave Client ID and Secret empty; ChatGPT registers itself with ScanFood automatically.
  4. ChatGPT warns that OpenAI has not reviewed this app — tick I understand and want to continue, then press Create.

  5. Press Continue to ScanFood — the ScanFood sign-in page opens. Check that the address starts with https://api.scanfood.co/oauth/, then sign in with your ScanFood email and password.

  6. Choose the shops ChatGPT may read (tick several, or choose Whole franchise), check the “What it can read” list, and press Allow. You are taken back to ChatGPT automatically.

  7. Open a new chat and start with the app’s name, for example:

Use ScanFood: how much did the shop sell today?

or pick ScanFood from the tools menu (the + button) in the message box before asking.

If your account has a Developer mode switch

Section titled “If your account has a Developer mode switch”

Some accounts must turn on Developer mode before the create button appears: Settings → Security and login (on some versions under Apps / Connectors → Advanced) → turn on Developer mode. Then continue from step 1.

Accounts without this switch don’t need to look for it — use chatgpt.com/plugins as above (this is the path our team used to connect for real).

  • Turn ScanFood on for the chat before asking — start with “Use ScanFood”, or pick it from the + button.
  • ChatGPT may ask you to confirm before it fetches data the first time — every ScanFood command is read-only, so it is safe to allow.
  • See questions that really work in Example questions.

When you allow access you can tick several shops in one connection, or choose Whole franchise (branches your account gains access to later are included automatically). When you ask, name the shop or branch in your question — if the connection covers several shops and you don’t, ScanFood never guesses: it sends the list of shops back so the AI asks you which one you mean. Every answer the AI receives carries the name of the shop the numbers belong to. Totals across all branches are available when “Whole franchise” was chosen (example questions). To add or remove shops later, disconnect and connect again (how to disconnect).

Open chatgpt.com/plugins → select ScanFood → remove or disconnect it. To be sure access is cut on the ScanFood side too, also disconnect at api.scanfood.co/oauth/connections.

Data ChatGPT reads from ScanFood to answer you is sent to OpenAI for processing and is covered by OpenAI’s data policies and your ChatGPT account settings (for example, whether chats may be used to improve models) — see Permissions & privacy.
